As someone who has long been an enthusiast of crossfit style and free weights based circuit training, I found myself plateuing with certain complex movements, and first approached Matt to develop my barbell snatch. Matt stripped it right back to basics, showing me some movements to help improve my mobility, and breaking down the elements of the snatch into practical segments before piecing them together into a full move.

Quickly learning how the key to unlocking potential lay in the correct technique of the movement, this naturally lead to an interest in other Olympic lifts, and I have trained with him to develop both my clean and clean and jerk, which I’d never previously done but are now a staple of my strength training! Matt is a diligent coach, super likeable and friendly with loads of positive energy. Training has been a huge part of my life and I have had my fair share of getting involved and stuck in with different styles. Coming from a body building, power lifting and fitness background I already had a stable foundation to work from. One day, I saw Matt doing a barbell snatch and thought, I want to do that, can you teach me? Olympic lifting did not come naturally to me and I remember looking at Matt and saying ‘I’m strong? Why can’t I do it?’.

We started with the basics and Matt actually makes each session enjoyable and we laugh a lot. Matt is very encouraging but doesn’t let me run away with myself as I constantly would want to add weight, he’s still the boss. I also liked that he understood my training back ground and incorporated that into our sessions. What I like the most is that Matt gets excited when you do, he celebrates with you with makes you feel like your training with a friend, it isn’t awkward it’s fun!

I started Matt’s olympic weightlifting programme with the aim of improving my Olympic lifts and getting stronger. Before I started the programme, Matt took the time to clearly understand my goals and worked up a personalised programme that would meet my needs. Alongside my programme I also had a weekly PT session with Matt where I could get individual feedback on my technique. Matt was an excellent coach in these sessions. He is very knowledgable and was always very positive and encouraging. Following Matt’s programme, in 8 months I increased my C&J from 50kg to 68kg, my snatch from 36kg to 55kg and achieved multiple PBs in my compound lifts. He is one of the best if you’re looking to progress in this area.

As a competitive swimmer, I’ve always been used to training- after having a while away from training I decided to go back to the gym, but wanted some help with areas of training that I wasn’t familiar with - e.g weights, certain lifts, using certain equipment and generally just improving my fitness.

Since Matt has been programming for me, my fitness and confidence in the gym and with training in general has greatly improved. He is always encouraging me to push and challenge my self. Matt is great at adapting his regimes if I’ve had injuries to ensure safe and quality training. His sessions include a range of training including weights, lifts and conditioning. Matt has a wealth of knowledge and is always able to answer questions which are training/ nutrition related.
